In the News: Renovations at the Gadsden Airport

renovations at Gadsden Airport

Have you heard the news? Improvements are about to take off thanks to several grants going toward renovations at the Gadsden Airport.

About renovations at the Gadsden Airport

Also known as the Northeast Alabama Regional Airport, the renovation project is being funded by both federal and state grants.

According to reports, two grants awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration will cover the majority of the upgrades to the main runway. The main runway is about 6,802 feet long and 150 feet wide.

More specifically, renovations at the Gadsden Airport include the main runway receiving a new sealcoat, crack seal and remarking. In addition, a 6,000-square-foot section of the runway will be reconstructed because of buckling.

Along with the federal grants, the Alabama Department of Transportation and the city have both pledged additional funds to further support the renovations at the Gadsden Airport. Some funds will be used for terminal upgrades and, eventually, will go toward applying for a license to fly commercial planes.

More about the Gadsden Airport

Equipped with two runways, most flights should carry on as planned throughout the construction process. The second runway is about 4,804 feet long.

Work is set to gear up during the fall with plans to complete the renovations by the spring of 2024.

Located at 185 Ira Gray Drive, private planes, business jets and chartered flights routinely come in and out of the airport.
