Last month the Alabama Department of Transportation made a big announcement for our area. After years in the making, the Gadsden Eastern Connector project is now fully funded and set to get underway!
The Gadsden Eastern Connector
The Gadsden Eastern Connector project will have several positive impacts on the area.
The project will connect Interstate 759 to U.S. Highway 431. More specifically, the project will include a four-lane divided highway with curb and gutters that begins where Interstate 759 comes into Gadsden.
The Gadsden Eastern Connector will extend for about two miles from the end of I-759 at George Wallace Drive to the intersection of U.S. 431 and U.S. 278.
The connector will pave the way for a number of benefits.
For starters, the extension will help alleviate traffic congestion in the area. It will allow for quicker travel times. Plus, products and supplies will get where they need to go faster too.
The $65-million project is being fully funded by the Rebuild Alabama Act Annual Grant Program.
What’s next
The announcement of the Gadsden Eastern Connector project funding is just the beginning.
Reports say the massive undertaking should take about five years to complete. That means residents and visitors alike will be seeing plenty of orange barrels!
With funding secured, the next step is acquiring the necessary land.
From there, utilities will be relocated, and the construction process will begin. It’s expected to start by the end of 2023 or in early 2024.
