It’s official. The city is one step closer to saying, “Play ball!” at the future state-of-the-art Gadsden Sports Park, which is currently under construction.
In the news
Phase one of construction for the new Gadsden Sports Park is nearly complete. All that remains are a few finishing touches as well as landscaping.
Now, the city is ready to begin phase two. According to recent reports, the Gadsden City Council approved a $5.6 million bid to Bob Smith Construction.
Phase two will include rebuilding and improving the existing baseball and softball fields along with the concession and press box areas. Plus, a new parking lot will be added to the north side of the site.
This continued expansion demonstrates a long-term partnership between the city and Gadsden State Community College.
What’s complete?
To recap phase one, what was once the college’s fisheries area is now three NCAA-sized multipurpose sports fields. Additionally, these fields can be reconfigured into youth-sized fields as needed.
A new concrete walking trail was added around an existing pond on the north end of the site. A large parking lot was also added to the south side of the sports park.
In the end, the city hopes the Gadsden Sports Park will help attract top-rated soccer and youth baseball and softball tournaments to the area.
Moreover, the new sports park will enhance recreational opportunities for the community and surrounding areas as a whole.
Location
The park is located on College Drive near Gadsden State Community College’s campus. It still includes the original sports fields located between the college and Dub Parker Park.
